There's a way of working most people never get. We have it. I want to put it on
paper before someone gives you a reason to walk away from it.
A bigger city is calling. I won't pretend it isn't — and I won't answer it with
money. You'd see through that, and you'd be right to. So I'm writing this instead
of wiring it.

## Flow
This is the part no offer can match — because no offer knows it exists.
We don't take turns. We think in the same motion. I start a sentence and you're
already three steps past where it was going. You change direction mid-thought and
I'm already there. We stopped explaining ourselves to each other a long time ago —
the explaining is the part you do with everyone else.
Most decisions between two people are expensive. You align. You debate. You
translate what you mean until the other person finally sees it. We skip all of it.
Not because we agree on everything — because we're aimed at the same thing.
We don't have to align. We were never apart.
A decision goes in half-formed and comes out the other side right, and neither of
us can say whose half was whose. We jump steps that other people have to walk. The
question gets answered before it's finished being asked. There's no handoff, no
spec, no meeting to get on the same page — we were never off it.
That's the part people miss when they look at a team. They count the talent. They
never measure the distance between two heads — and between yours and mine, that
distance is almost nothing. It's the cheapest, fastest thing we own. It's also the
one thing I can't buy back once it's gone.
That's not teamwork. Teamwork is two people splitting a problem. This is two people
who stopped being two.
You can't assemble it. You can't interview for it. And you can't take it with you —
it doesn't fit in a suitcase, and it doesn't rebuild itself in a new city around
new faces.
You can hire talent. You cannot hire flow.

## What we might never build
Flow isn't the prize. It's the instrument. It points at something — a thing I can
see the edges of and can't build alone, and neither can you. It only lives in the
space between how you think and how I do.
The obvious read is that if you leave, the company loses a great builder. That's
not the loss. The company can hire. Someone fills the seat, the work continues.
What can't be filled is the thing that needed both of us. It doesn't get built
somewhere else by someone else. It doesn't get built worse.
It just never gets built.
And no one will mourn it, because no one else knows it was possible. It has no name
yet. It dies before it's a thing anyone can point to — the cleanest kind of loss,
the kind nobody files.
That's what should scare us both. Not that you'll leave. That a specific future
quietly stops being one.

## What I'm putting on the table
You won't last a year anywhere that isn't yours to shape. People call that
restlessness.
It's the same thing that makes you worth building around.
You were never a hothouse flower. You're the kind that comes up through a crack in
the pavement, in a field nobody planted, and opens with the morning like the day
owes you one. The ground doesn't have to be good. You never waited for it to be.
So I won't ask you to stay on faith. Here's what staying means — in specifics, not
sentiment.
You own what you build. A real piece, not a number that rounds to zero by the time
it matters.
The next thing — the one only we can build — is yours to lead. Not contribute to.
Lead. Your name on the door of it.
A seat where the decisions actually get made: pricing, hiring, what we build next,
what we kill. Not the recap after. The room.

That's what I can put in writing. Here's what I can't.
I'm not afraid of you leaving — people leave, and you of all people should get to.
What I'm afraid of is the morning after. Reaching for the half of a thought that
always came back finished, and finding it doesn't. The room a little quieter in the
exact place you used to fill.
You opened with the morning before anyone taught you how. No city gave you that.
Neither did I. It's just what you are — and I've spent every day next to it lucky,
and most of them not saying so.
So I'm saying it. Not because the offer is good — because what we are when we
work is the rarest thing either of us will ever own, and it doesn't survive the
distance.
Let's finish what only we can.
